The cups driver is GPL while the lpr is a custom Brother license. Source: http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreement/agreement.cgi?dlfile=http://solutions.brother.com/Library/sol/printer/linux/dlf/brhl2140lpr-2.0.2-1.i386.rpm&lang=English_lpr

@davekong: This link may be of relevance, although I'm not sure precisely which binaries the license covers: http://www.brother.com/cgi-bin/agreement/agreement.cgi?dlfile=http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/brother-laser2-cups-driver-2.0.2-1.tar.gz&lang=English_gpl Context: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_src.html#srccd_p1 (search the page for "HL-2140")

I cleaned up the package some and fixed some namcap complaints. I did not make make a symlink to brPrintList since this is supposed to be a list that could include more than just one printer. Instead, during a new install, the contents of brHL2140rc will automatically be appended to the file brPrintList. This appears to have fixed the issue I was having with margins and adding a2ps as a dependency appears to have fixed my non-printing issue. Please let me know if there are further improvements I can make. I was going to move the ELF files that are not correctly placed in the PATH, but will need to test this first to make sure it does not break anything. I also would like to add a license file, but was unable to find the text for such a document.

Hey guys. I just orphaned this package. I hope someone is able to improve it and solve some of these outstanding issues. Cheers. :D

@davekong I had a similar issue. In my case I noticed that the a2ps package is missing from the depends list in the PKGBUILD. Try installing that and see if it fixes your issue.

It stopped working as in, the printer makes noises and CUPS says that it completed the job, but no paper comes out. There is a low ink light on, but that has been on for a while and previous print jobs did not appear faded. I had a problem similar to this before I got the correct driver, but I have been using this driver since then.

Instead of creating that file manually create a symlink from brHL2140rc to brPrintList ie. "sudo ln -s /usr/share/Brother/inf/brHL2140rc /usr/share/Brother/inf/brPrintList" It includes the default formatted printer options and margins are working as expected for me....perhaps this can be added to the PKGBUILD in a future update if it helps.

I created the file /usr/share/Brother/inf/brPrintList and added "HL2140" to it and the top margin now appears to be the same as it was before. The bottom of a page got cut off, but enough of the page is being used so that it seems alright. I just tell programs to pretend like the bottom margin should be larger than it really is.

Nothing has changed other than the source URI. I experience problems with the top margin as well. Someone mentioned that adding "HL2140" to /usr/share/Brother/inf/brPrintList might offer a solution. That file doesn't exist in the package though.

Since the last update, the vertical alignment on my printer seems to be wrong when using evince's print and vim's ":hardcopy". Could this have something to do with the package?
