Licensing issues are the reason you need to download the source yourself. THey require you to register and login. The package benefit is of course nicer integration in your system and easy updates via the package manager. Plus it installs a launcher by default.

Honesly, if you have to download the source yourself, which may be unavoidable due to licensing, I'm not sure what the benefit of an AUR package is. It seems much easier to download the source .tar.gz... First install... tar -xf scrt-7.3.6.963.ubuntu13.tar.gz sudo mv scrt... /opt/securecrt cp /opt/securecrt/SecureCRT.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/ nano ~/.local/share/applications SecureCRT.desktop # Edit Exec path and Icon path ...done. Updates (download new version) tar -xf scrt-7.3.6.xxx...tar.gz sudo rm -rf /opt/securecrt sudo mv scrt... /opt Done # Of course, you'd install the launcher to /usr/share/applications/ if you wanted it system wide.
