what is a VCS pkgbuild?
A pkbuild which pull the latest commit using a Version Control System [git, mercurial (hg), subversion (svn), bazaar (bzr), etc ]
Does this mean that this soft will no longer be updated?
No, it is still updated
since the software author does not always rename the version on their website
Note that the upstream archives are renamed at download with $(date +%F-%H) since years, so the renaming is 'hourly'
Hi, thank you for maintaing this package. I appreciate the idea of the ocr-downloads. Maybe it is possible to include/exclude these by asking the user during installation? Maybe it might be even an option to ask for the languages to be included? The OCR-files are quite big and e.g. I’ll only nee two languages and i am not interested in the whole bunch of them. Just my two cents.

You just run the install command again using your AUR helper e.g. yay:
yay -S vuescan-bin, the PKGBUILD then automatically grabs the latest version.
Sometimes you also have to use the Packages to cleanBuild? option since the software author does not always rename the version on their website when making very small updates.
If you are using yay you will probably see a message like vuescan-bin: local (9.8.09-1) is newer than AUR (9.7.99-2) when running yay but this seems unavoidable.
So how does this work, can you explain how I can update vuescan?
In the last few weeks, when trying to update the package I always get timeouts e.g.:

These timeouts happen when the script is trying to download some of the OCR packages. My internet connection is stable (1 Gbit/s down via optical fiber) and I only ever have such issues with vuescan-bin.
Is there a way to fix this? Trying to update vuescan-bin takes at least an hour for me because of the constant retries and the slow connection to the https://www.hamrick.com servers.
I suppose the problem is on the hamrick.com server side but I am still "affected" because the OCR packages get downloaded each time via the PKGBUILD.
libusb-compat is no longer detect by namcapp and have been removed

I think wget should be added as a dependency. On a fresh system install I got line 97: wget: command not found. Installing wget solved the problem.

Sorry I don't understand - what is a VCS pkgbuild? A google search does not net me any meaningful explanation. Does this mean that this soft will no longer be updated?
If VueScan notifies you that a new version is available, just re-install the AUR package. This will download the new VueScan for you.
For me, all it took was paru -S vuescan-bin.

OCR is only available for the professional edition, OCR files should be splitted to a separate pkgbuild? Send your opinion at my email

The pkgbuild is now considered like a VCS one, this mean it will NOT be bumped for every version, report ONLY build problems not new versions.
