Now that Firefox does not work without PulseAudio, I think this package should be promoted to the official repos...

I do not use skype, but tested with mpv: $ apulse mpv --ao=pulse file.mkv Works just fine... Can you give any more detail? What architecture? I think you have to use apluse32 (from lib32-apulse) for skype on x86_64.

Apulse stopped working with skype after alsa-utils and alsa-lib updated to version 1.1.x

@aaditya. I don't think it is a very good idea. First, it does not really provides pulseaudio, the sound server. It provides pulseaudio compatible libraries that enable software using these libraries to work with pulseaudio. But these libraries are not found by default. If you have only apulse (and not libpulse), you should then adjust /etc/ld.so.conf.d (or use LD_LIBRARY_PATH) for these libraries to be found by default. But it is a bad idea. The official pulseaudio libraries (§package libpulse) fails if a software use them without having pulseaudio. Most softwares detect that and use ALSA directly instead. If you link them with the apulse directly, they will believe pulseaudio is working and use the libpulse libraries; which in this case is not a terrible good idea. Just try with vlc (default config), if you have libpulse and not pulseaudio, you will see an error that the software cannot connect to pulseaudio and then use ALSA. if you run it with apulse vlc, vlc use the pulseaudiuo libraries and fail (apulse is maybe not very complete). Skype is an exception because it only can use pulseaudio libraries and apulse come in the rescue; but it should be used only for these kinds of software.
