@djpohly I actually have the test that used XDG_RUNTIME_DIR removed in the master. It had several problems beside that.

make check complains when XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is not set (e.g. on an automated build system). It looks like the standard fix is:

check() {
  mkdir -p -m 700 "${XDG_RUNTIME_DIR:=$PWD/runtime-dir}"
  export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
  ...
}

as is done in a few official packages.

Forgot to include sphinx as a build dependency. Sorry. I will fix it right away.
