Info from expressvpn's site ...

wget https://www.expressvpn.com/expressvpn_release_public_key_0xAFF2A1415F6A3A38.asc

gpg --import expressvpn_release_public_key_0xAFF2A1415F6A3A38.asc

All installed fine; thank you very much for maintaining.

Looks like update notifications are working for the linux client now, but unfortunately the current version (2.3.2) thinks it's an older version (2.3.1 -- check expressvpn --version), so the update alert people get when they run expressvpn status may be a false positive.

Please check what version is reported at https://www.expressvpn.com/latest (or https://www.expressvpn.com/support/troubleshooting/china-status/#linux as this sometimes gets updates listed sooner) before flagging the package as out-of-date.

Please note that, from v2.0.0, ExpressVPN will be providing signed Arch packages on their website (alongside the deb and rpm packages). I'll be continuing to update this package, but for those that find using the AUR cumbersome or just don't want to wait, please be aware of this option.

EDIT: packages were delayed for testing, but seem to be live as of 2019-01-23.

I have a fix good enough for me after reading the top comment here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=228677

Create an alias in your profile: alias expressvpn-disconnect='expressvpn disconnect && sudo sh -c "echo nameserver 8.8.8.8 > /etc/resolv.conf"'

Every time you connect to the VPN it creates the file /ect/resolv.conf, re-writing that file to use google's DNS server when you disconnect allows you to connect without the VPN.

brokenbadger and Anointed, enter the command: systemctl enable expressvpn.service

That makes sure the service is started automatically on boot.

Anointed commented on 2018-02-22 06:57 (UTC)

I have the same issue as brokenbadger but when I follow WorMzy's advice and attempt to enable the service like so:

systemctl start unit

I get the following error:

Failed to start unit.service: Unit unit.service not found.

I'm new to arch and would also appreciate any pointers since I do want to get ExpreeVPN up and running.

Thanks in advance

It seems that, after connecting to a expressvpn server, when I switch back to normal (not vpn) connection dns servers are lost. This is happening only with last NetworkManager 1.10.5dev+3+g5159c34ea-1- Switching back to previous version fix the problem. The difference is that /etc/resolv.conf (pointing to /var/run/expressvpn/resolv.conf) is empty after switching back, where before not.

EDIT: the problem seems that after a reboot the file /var/run/expressvpn/resolv.conf disappears

Hey WorMzy,

Thats solved it, thanks! I thought it might be something simple to fix, but im still a bit green when it comes to a lot of CLI commands. Im loving the Arch structure and I know asking questions on the AUR when not using a pure Arch install is mostly frowned upon (understandable), so I appreciate the "pointer" even more.

Please keep up the great work.

Enable the service.

Hi,

Im having the same issues with a fresh install of Manjaro.....

[brokenbadger@manjaro-pc ~]$ expressvpn connect smart Cannot connect to expressvpnd daemon.

It seems the expressvpn daemon is not running. Please run "sudo service expressvpn restart" to start it.

If the problem persists, please contact us. [brokenbadger@manjaro-pc ~]$

Only way I can kick start it is to enter:

[brokenbadger@manjaro-pc ~]$ systemctl start expressvpn.service

But I have to input this on every system start up? Any sugestions on making this more permanent/automatic, would be appreciated.

No problems here on an up-to-date Arch install. Check the service is running with: systemctl status expressvpn.service

Hi,

On my Arch the current version of ExpressVPN is not working? It was working before it recently updated.

I get the following in terminal:

[jezxlee@SuperFastDesktop ~]$ expressvpn connect Cannot connect to expressvpnd daemon.

It seems the expressvpn daemon is not running. Please run "sudo service expressvpn restart" to start it.

If the problem persists, please contact us. [jezxlee@SuperFastDesktop ~]$

<hr>

Any ideas on how to fix this or will there be an update to resolve this issue? Thanks!

Yep, when I get back from holiday (see below). Seems every upstream has decided to update this week.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hello WorMzy, things keep moving :) I note that EVPN have now released another update and this one is v1.3.1. Do you think you will be able to similarly update that soon? Cheers.
