Just tried a fresh new install and everything works ok. @malcolmsparks: directory /run/cassandra is created by systemd as specified in file /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/cassandra.conf. Maybe something went wrong and this dir got removed. @joschi: maybe you could add `systemd-tmpfiles --create cassandra.conf` also on "post_update()" as package elasticsearch does [0].
