I just tried starting Firefox in SafeMode and that worked for me. But I'm using Mate as window manager. Could you check what start command is used in your Gnome shell? Here it is 'firefox-esr -safe-mode %u'

Hey, I just noticed a strange behavior on Firefox. In my Gnome shell is written Firefox ESR - SafeMode and that, although Firefox is obviously not in SafeMode, since all Addons are enabled.
I just completely reinstalled Firefox and started it with a clean profile and observed the same behavior.
When I start Firefox in SafeMode, it actually starts in SafeMode.
Can any of you confirm this behavior?

@toniwiki i've tried various tweaks in about:config and installed ffmpeg-compact57 and now html5 with MSE & H.264 working

Same problem here with firefox-esr-bin 52.8.0-1.
According to https://www.youtube.com/html5, firefox has no H.264 and MSE & H.264 support. On pages with html5 <video> tag with type="video/mp4" firefox tells "Video format or MIME type is not supported".</video>
Any workaround to keep current ffmpeg version?

In firefox-esr-bin 52.8.0-1 the playback support for some kinds of embedded audio and video is broken. Here are examples of affected websites: https://www.zdf.de/ https://www.francetvinfo.fr/ https://voice.mozilla.org/en
A workaround which works for me is to downgrade ffmpeg to version 1:3.4.2-2.
As a consequence, the following two packages also have to be downgraded to the following versions: x264 2:152.20171224-1 libquicktime 1.2.4-17
Does anybody else experience this problem?
