@canurabus, then it's a different crash (e.g. if you didn't see fit to read the opt depends).

Changing/removing the symlink doesn't work for me -- still crashes.

So, instead of breaking it for everyone, while at the same time offering something for those who didn't have 6.2 to smile about I decided that the 'split package trick' is realistically the only sane choice here.
So what this means is that the package still shows up as 6.2 but actually downloads 7.0, when manually done so.
The only problem is still the segfault on startup to which somebody already found maybe a bit ugly fix in the Support Forums by simply removing the font .conf symlink in question but it's the _only_ solution we have so let's just work with it.
So after the install, as already pointed out in the .install, you need to remove or rename the symlink '/etc/fonts/conf.d/65-fonts-persian.conf' -> '/etc/fonts/conf.avail/65-fonts-persian.conf' (owned by 'fontconfig').
When renaming it has to be something other than '[0-9]*.conf' (e.g. 'fonts-persian.conf' or '65-fonts-persian.confa').
You can play around with the file too of course and I've already noticed that it's enough, if you either remove:
1) all the <alias> tags from under "<!-- Name changes and spelling variant aliases -->" except for 'Fantezi' (the last one) OR
2) all the <match> tags from under "<!-- Use Titr in titles -->".
So yeah. The performance is slow as hell no matter what you disable (e.g. even the new 3D imagery) but at least my most important package won't be an insult to all the other ones I have by carrying a sign that says it's out-of-date.

Seems like the Ubuntu people have no better luck than us: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/earth/linux/dlzBfGl4eKM
The previous URL still points to the old 5.2, even though it says "6.2" (http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html -> advanced setup, or http://dl.google.com/earth/client/advanced/previous/GoogleEarthLinux.bin).

The .deb doesn't pass validity check. The new md5sum is 'cc953c54fb687785028db10d951aa3c6'.
I don't know if this is related but it keeps segfaulting for me. Maybe the file just got corrupted.

I will not update (for now) to the latest version 7.3.6.9326 because it crashes continuously for me.
