This is not up to you to decide what part of package to exclude. All you have to do is maintain an AUR script which installs whole application just like developer designed it. It's developer responsibility to exclude it if it wants so, not yours.

The *.desktop file /usr/share/applications/Cisco-PacketTracer.desktop has the wrong icon path.
The wrong path:
/opt/pt/arg/app.png
Needs to be replaced with:
/usr/share/packettracer/art/app.png

Here's how I successfully installed Packet Tracer 7.1 on my system.
1. Download "PacketTracer71_64bit_linux.tar.gz" from http://netacad.com
2. # yaourt -S packettracer (install all dependencies and wait till it puts out this error:
==> ERROR: Makepkg was unable to build .
==> Restart building packettracer ? [y/N]
[ DO NOT TYPE "Y" OR "N", LEAVE ALONE FOR NOW ]
3. Open new terminal and look for "packettracer" file by typing in:
# sudo find / -name "packettracer" -print 2>/dev/null
4. Mine was located in this dir: "/tmp/yaourt-tmp-nickle/aur-packettracer/"
5. Now copy previously downloaded "PacketTracer71_64bit_linux.tar.gz" and paste
into dir:
# cp PacketTracer71_64bit_linux.tar.gz /tmp/yaourt-tmp-nickle/aur-packettracer/PacketTracer71_64bit_linux.tar.gz
6. Now return back to original terminal and type "Y" to continue install. Ignore errors towards the
end about "cannot remove from /tmp.

To install packettracer follow this guidelines:
1. Download the snapshot from this AUR.
2. Tar -zxf the packettracer.tar.gz snapshot (it creates the dir packettracer/ with the PKGBUILD on it).
3. Download the latest packettracer tarball from your Netacad account and copy it into the packettracer/ dir.
4. Create the package with the command makepkg (it creates a packettracer.pkg.tar.xz).
5. Install the package with either makepkg -i or sudo pacman -U packettracer.pkg.tar.xz.

@MrSmith, Since the version 6.3-2 from 2016-06-20, installs in the directory /usr/share/packettracer/ to follow the arch guidelines.

Why does this new version install in the directory /usr/share/packettracer/ and no more in /opt/pt?

Hello, Bump to new version packettracer 7.1-1.
Cisco discontinues the 32 bit linux version, only 64 bits version available.

@Leamer, thank you so much! I followed your instructions step-by-step (though I used a newer version of packettracer compared to the one you referenced at the time of your posting). I was able to launch it successfully on the first try. As a total beginner to linux (currently using Manjaro xfce), this is a wonderful feeling. Many thanks again!

To install all versions of packettracer except 7.2.2, follow this guidelines: 1.
Packettracer 7.2.2 are auto installable via run file, download it from netacad webpage and run it, you don't need this package.
