I'd like to build this package on a system running the linux-lts 3.0.46 kernel. It seems that the spl dependency requires linux-headers>=3.5. According to http://zfsonlinux.org/faq.html#WhatKernelVersionsAreSupported supported Linux kernel range is 2.6.26 - 3.5. Are there any workarounds you are aware of to get zfs running with linux-lts?

@mikers and @demizer: Regarding systemd I can say that "A mixed systemd/initscripts installation" according to the systemd wiki with zfs being the only daemon listed in rc.conf works for me. But I do not use ZFS on the root file system. So there is no need to avoid systemd.

I have flagged all of the packages out of date due to the 3.6 kernel in core. The spl package does not currently build with the 3.6 kernel and the api updates to allow it to build will not land until rc12 which should come in the next few weeks. Until then I recommend staying with 3.5 kernel until rc12 is released. Thanks!

@mikers, thanks for the tip. Now i'm not sure when systemd support will be implemented. I myself don't know enough about the internals of systemd (or zfs for that matter) to implement the support myself, and have zero time to really dig deep. Looks like my desktop will not be systemd for a while.

There is already a ticket for systemd support upstream: https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/847 Nothing complete has been done; there is a large disinterest among the developers towards supporting it. Not that it's impossible (nor are they against it), it's just difficult and apparently none of them use systemd themselves.

@srf21c, currently you have to rebuild the package manually on kernel upgrades. I am working on DKMS packages to allow this step to be done automatically. @maattd, The rc.d file is supported upstream by the zfsonlinux developers. I will have to get in touch with them to figure out systemd support.

Hi, Thanks for this package. However they seem to provide a rc.d file but no systemd service ?

zfs install broken by recent upgrade to 3.5.6-1-ARCH kernel on x64. Removing and re-installing via yaourt resolved the issue.

If anyone is interested in the new build tool, you can track the progress here: https://github.com/demizer/aur-zfs/tree/newbuild

@ronnylov, Yes that is the way I perform kernel updates as well and it is not effective. That's why I am working on a new build script. I want to create a couple DKMS packages so I don't have to do the rebuilding manually. Unfortunately, this would mean that I would have to maintain 8 separate PKGBUILDS for spl, spl-utils, zfs, and zfs-utils packages. The new build tool I am working on will allow me to only have to edit one file and then I can build and test all the packages at once.
