I just found this article with a workaround ( I haven't tested it yet): https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/1181623-displaylink-ubuntu-driver-after-recent-x-upgrades

I got the evdi-pre-release version 1.5.0-4 (latest)
xorg-server (as suggested by K5HV): 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-2 xf86-video-intel: 1:2.99.917+823+gd9bf46e4-1 .. and.. kernel 4.14.41-1-lts (i.e. the latest) Did it work in the past for you?
Hopefully the good people of Displaylink will update their driver(s) to work with xorg-server 1.20, too (http://www.displaylink.com/downloads/ubuntu).

@jnvandermeer What version of evdi are you using? Following your suggestions in downgrading xorg and co. did not work for me.
I'm currently using evdi-pre-release 1.5.0-9 and displaylink 4.2.29-1

I use 2 external screens - 1 on USB-C, 1 on displaylink (VGA) with a Dell XPS13 9360.
I can confirm that downgrade to 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-2 of the 3 packages as described by K5HV makes my external displaylink display work again.
I also had to downgrade xf86-video-intel, as well, or else it won't allow xorg-server <1.20. The version I picked for downgrade of xf86-video-intel was: xf86-video-intel-1:2.99.917%2B767%2Bg7e9e92c8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
So you have to specify both within a single 'downgrade' command.
IN ADDITION, you have probably to use the linux-lts kernel to boot up.
And to top it all off, finally, if you use cinnamon and you get these strange black artefacts around your windows (on your external screens only) that blotch out your background image or background gradient, you'll have to use ALT-F2 + 'r' to restart cinnamon. This is probably a cinnamon bug, though, that I haven't seen anywhere reported yet.
Feel free to edit if it's too much info -- thanks for the comment @K5HV and @PlusMinus for maintenance.

I've resolved my problem with 4.2.29-1. My evdi version was too old. But it seems that current displaylink is not compatible with xorg-server==1.20. It was crashing X. Downgrade to xorg-server (and xorg-server-common and xorg-server-xwayland) to 1.19.6+13+gd0d1a694f-2 fixed it for me (for now)

Ah sorry, it was a local build I tried but didn't commit because it wasn't worth it.

@PlusMinus, how did you get the version 4.2.29-2? In my case there is only 4.2.29-1 available...
Thanks!

This config works for me right now:
$ yaourt -Qi displaylink evdi-pre-release | grep -A1 Name
Name : displaylink
Version : 4.2.29-1
--
Name : evdi-pre-release
Version : 1.5.0-3

Failed to work with 4.2.29-1. Diamond BVU5500H USB to HDMI 4K/2K, DisplayLink DL-5500, USB vendor:product 17e9:4301. Reverted to 4.1.9-1 and all was well. Thank you.
