When reporting this package as outdated make sure there is indeed a new version for Linux Desktop. You can have a look at the "Stable updates" tag in Release blog for this.

You can also run this command to obtain the version string for the latest chrome version:

$ curl -sSf https://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/dists/stable/main/binary-amd64/Packages | \
     grep -A1 "Package: google-chrome-stable" | \
     awk '/Version/{print $2}' | \
     cut -d '-' -f1

Do not report updates for ChromeOS, Android or other platforms stable versions as updates here.

Is anyone else having issues with Chrome refusing to launch lately?

Just getting this error:

Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files

EDIT: Well, I just had to install gnome-keyring. Have no idea what changed requiring that for Chrome to run.

I also see severe memory usage issue in recent versions. I open hundreds of tabs and use tab suspender. It used to work with only less than 2GB, now I have to restart it once every day to free 6GB of memory or it will take all of swap.

angelv commented on 2017-12-20 21:26 (UTC) (edited on 2017-12-20 22:05 (UTC) by angelv)

I see. Didn't realize about the previous high memory comment. I guess it is probably the same thing. I don't know, since I was not monitoring memory usage and the computer became truly unusable even after waiting for a few minutes, so I couldn't even change to a terminal. I will check today and see if the memory is also the issue in my case.

After doing some tests, my issue seems different. Memory usage was a total of about 1.7GB (in a system with 8GB) with 8 tabs open. I tried to resize the Chrome window and suddenly the whole thing froze....

As in like as per the previous comments?

angelv commented on 2017-12-20 21:08 (UTC)

Anybody experiencing troubles with the latest google-chrome-stable? I updated the system during this week, and now I cannot use chrome properly: it works OK for some time, but at some point the computer freezes (I can move the mouse) but cannot click on anything and the keyboard is also unresponsive and I have to hard boot. I'm not completely sure chrome is responsible, but it has always happened (at least 5-6 times in a few hours) when I was using it and none when I have switched to Firefox.

Previous one: https://dl.google.com/linux/deb/pool/main/g/google-chrome-stable/google-chrome-stable_62.0.3202.94-1_amd64.deb

Also see /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ (it's good to move AUR packages there also).

pazof commented on 2017-12-13 16:08 (UTC)

Also need to report the memory issue with 63.0.3239.84-1 - it now eats up at least 3 times the memory it used to - running it on a 16GB RAM system, the computer can hardly operate without lagging after opening the 5th Chrome tab or so.

DeadMetaler commented on 2017-12-09 09:53 (UTC)

google-chrome 63.0.3239.84-1 has memory leak for me. After some time it eats 4GB of memory, when normal for my situation is 1GB.

Chrome throws an error when starting from the command line: $ google-chrome-stable /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: FcWeightToOpenType Note that Chromium throws the same error, but I'd rather have Chrome working ;-)

cswl commented on 2017-11-20 13:06 (UTC)

I see, I use XFCE, but I might have pulled some gnome depedencies. I didn't notice the optdeps section during building. Sorry for the trouble.

Det commented on 2017-11-19 11:10 (UTC)

AFAIK it's a dependency only on GNOME. That's why it's an optdep.

cswl commented on 2017-11-19 09:06 (UTC)

Update.. I launched it from terminal and got this error.. Gkr-Message: secret service operation failed: The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files Installing "gnome-keyring" it launched and asked to set up keyring.. So maybe add dependency on gnome-keyring?

Nevermind, pacaur didn't find a update but I just manually updated. User error sorry to bother

Gdb? Strace? Since when is this? Does a clean ~/.config/google-chrome & ~/.cache/google-chrome help?

Det commented on 2017-10-11 00:37 (UTC)

I'm assuming you mean /opt/google/chrome/google-chrome, but my line 49 says: exec -a "$0" "$HERE/chrome" "$@"

horosgrisa commented on 2017-10-10 20:33 (UTC)

file /usr/bin/google-chrome-stable have a bug. Please add a space between "$HERE/chrome" and "$CHROMIUM_USER_FLAGS" at line 49.

Det commented on 2017-10-07 12:59 (UTC)

I dunno. Looks like I don't need to add it, but can do anyway: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/54909, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=227734

The final vote. “What should be the pkgdesc of AUR/google-chrome?” With 82 votes: ● "One fast, simple, and secure browser for all your devices (Stable Channel)" - 17 votes (21%) ● "The popular and trusted web browser by Google (Stable Channel)" - 65 votes (79%) Now, my deciding vote of 49 votes will be cast and the winner is... ..no, I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Pkgdesc changed. ^^

@ratan: `rm ~/.cache/pacaur/google-chrome/eula_text.html` should fix it.

getting the following when building from pacaur: :: google-chrome package(s) failed to install. :: ensure package version does not mismatch between .SRCINFO and PKGBUILD :: ensure package name has a VCS suffix if this is a devel package

Det commented on 2017-09-27 02:40 (UTC)

libc++'s not required by google-chrome?

fuan_k commented on 2017-09-26 23:57 (UTC)

If you get the following errors (while building libc++) ==> Verifying source file signatures with gpg... llvm-5.0.0.src.tar.xz ... FAILED (unknown public key 0FC3042E345AD05D) libcxx-5.0.0.src.tar.xz ... FAILED (unknown public key 0FC3042E345AD05D) libcxxabi-5.0.0.src.tar.xz ... FAILED (unknown public key 0FC3042E345AD05D) ==> ERROR: One or more PGP signatures could not be verified! It seems that a way to fix it is to run the following command (ref: https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/libc%2B%2B/) gpg --recv-keys B6C8F98282B944E3B0D5C2530FC3042E345AD05D

Det commented on 2017-09-25 09:48 (UTC) (edited on 2017-09-26 15:12 (UTC) by Det)

That's a misconception between preimage resistance and collision resistance: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/MD5#/Preimage_vulnerability Collision basically means finding/generating any 2 strings/files that have the same hash. For MD5 since 2013 that seems to be 2^18, which "runs in less than a second on a regular computer". Preimage is having that one predetermined file, for which you need to find/generate a string/file to match. Since 2009 that sems to be 2^123.4, which is... quite a lot more. E: What am I doing. I linked the same page you did. Sublinked.

JelteF commented on 2017-09-25 09:15 (UTC)

Could the checksums in this package please be changed to sha256 instead of md5? MD5 hasn't been a secure hash function since a long time now: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD5#Security

Probably due to the now bundled 'eula_text.html'. Very confusing message.

@frimen: thank you! Same issue / solution! :-)

BurhanDanger commented on 2017-09-23 10:38 (UTC)

If you're facing problem like "frimen" noted , do a clean build with makepkg, you'll be fine. That was probably a pacaur issue.

Heh. Here's a poll: http://www.strawpoll.me/13987145 (closes at 2017-09-29 21:03) 1) "The popular and trusted web browser by Google (Stable Channel)" 2) "One fast, simple, and secure browser for all your devices (Stable Channel)"

Det commented on 2017-09-22 17:49 (UTC)

I think I might be willing to go something like "The popular and trusted web browser by Google".

Det commented on 2017-09-22 17:43 (UTC)

An attempt at minimal design with sophisticated technology. lol

technic93 commented on 2017-09-22 15:42 (UTC)

Well, in deb they have Description: The web browser from Google Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

Det commented on 2017-09-22 15:29 (UTC)

Maybe. But. If using my own words and not even their official phrasing, it would sound more like it's tantamount to just an opinion. I've always liked how the thing stands on its own merit.

petershinners commented on 2017-09-22 15:25 (UTC)

Perhaps it is time to change the summary? I don't believe "attempt" is valid any longer. Without getting creative it could be shortened to: A safe, fast, and stable browser developed by Google (Stable Channel)

For everybody struggling with the installation of the newest update that use a caching AUR helper like 'pacaur'. You need to delete the repository-folder from the cache because eula_text.html was is now part of the repository but also still exists in an untracked version in your local cache. For 'pacaur': 'rm -rf ~/.cache/pacaur/google-chrome'

Uhhh. Yea, I rather would, because that one will be deleted: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/google-chrome-cn/. You need to have something notable change in the package itself to create a separate one. Different source is not enough. :( E: Added.
