The errors I was experiencing the new build were as a result of having latte-dock running in the background so edge lauched successfully once I killed that process.

I'm on archolinux (linux-zen 5.14) running plasma desktop environment and I'm also on systemd 249.4-1-arch

UPDATE: it wasn't latte dock but one of the widgets I put on the top latte panel (Global Menu) so it is still possible to use latte dock with the new builds.

I can confirm the newest edge(94.0.972) now works well with systemd 249.3.

lonaowna commented on 2021-08-08 11:43 (UTC)

Looks like Edge 93 is compatible with the current systemd.

somepaulo commented on 2021-07-26 15:38 (UTC)

Disabling systemd-resolved service and/or reverting /etc/nsswitch.conf to default did nothing for me. But downgrading systemd-libs to 248.3-2 (the latest in the 248 series) fixed both Edge and Chrome for me: sudo downgrade systemd-libs, thank you @Epicccal

ruata commented on 2021-07-23 11:57 (UTC)

As a temporary solution just copy libnss_myhostname.so.2 from systemd-libs-248 into /opt/microsoft/msedge-beta. I think this should also help for dev version

angelettif commented on 2021-07-21 14:16 (UTC)

The solution is don't use systemd-resolved. If you can, don't use systemd. If you can, move to artix.

Epicccal commented on 2021-07-20 04:25 (UTC)

Hello, I think I found a solution.

this is a problem with systemd-libs (current version 249-3). After I downgrade it to version 248-5, the msedge-beta works normally.

execute sudo downgrade systemd-libs and choose systemd-libs-248

@Vedun: commenting out the hosts line in nsswitch.conf did the trick for me. I don't like systemd's expansionist behaviour. Why should it be involved in DNS resolving? Why are we, Arch users, bound to use systemd and all that comes with it?

Makes me seriously consider moving over to Artix (a systemd-free Arch fork that gets pretty positive reviews).

gebau00a commented on 2021-07-17 02:56 (UTC)

@angelettif: I can confirm, disabling systemd-resolved solves the issue for me as well

angelettif commented on 2021-07-16 16:56 (UTC) (edited on 2021-07-16 17:52 (UTC) by angelettif)

@Vedun Thank you removing /etc/nsswitch.conf, solved the problem.

My default host NSS switch conf is

hosts: files mymachines myhostname resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] dns

Could be so wrong that make edge segfault :D?

// It seems this resolve [!UNAVAIL=return] trigger the problem Could be another systemd bug?, in this case systemd-resolved ? // To me... yes.! sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved sudo systemctl stop systemd-resolved

disable systemd-resolved and configure /etc/resolv.conf Fixed.

gebau00a commented on 2021-07-16 15:58 (UTC) (edited on 2021-07-16 15:58 (UTC) by gebau00a)

Resetting the nsswitch.conf did not work for me, the reset file is the same as the old one. I also have the hostname for both 127.0.0.1 and ::1

But I can confirm, it's related to SmartScreenDnsResolver not being able to connect to an internet address.

Posting the question also in the Microsoft Tech Forum (https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/linux-edge-beta-problem-with-systemd-249/m-p/2550466), it gave a link to libnss_resolve.so.2

Checking the arch manuals, (https://man.archlinux.org/man/core/systemd/libnss_resolve.so.2.8.en), this file belongs to the systemd-resolved.service But even resetting nsswitch.conf according to the manual given there does not solve the error for me.

I only learned in this process, the only package to downgrade is actually systemd-libs

Vedun commented on 2021-07-16 15:06 (UTC) (edited on 2021-07-16 16:52 (UTC) by Vedun)

@angelettif Finally I found the problem! The whole problem is in the NSS, or rather in its settings. Delete the configuration file (/etc/nsswitch.conf) and then the settings NSS will be set to default.

Enjoy!

p.s. NSS - "Name Service Switch"

p.p.s. ... or you can just comment out the hosts line in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file, by default this line should be:

hosts: dns [!UNAVAIL=return] files

angelettif commented on 2021-07-16 14:03 (UTC)

/etc/hosts fix doesn't work for me

angelettif commented on 2021-07-16 13:18 (UTC)

what were on your hosts? I got my hostname and doesnt work. How can fail with a segfault just because some word is missing on a /etc/hosts

mister commented on 2021-07-16 12:23 (UTC)

As armadillo said, adding a loopback entry to /etc/hosts with your hostname seems to fix the issue. It did for me too

armadillo commented on 2021-07-16 08:36 (UTC) (edited on 2021-07-16 08:50 (UTC) by armadillo)

As per the comment posted for microsoft-edge-dev-bin, adding an entry to /etc/hosts for my own hostname fixes the issue for me. Either 127.0.1.1 (loopback) or the actual network IP seems OK.

Strange, but Google Chrome works fine with a new systemd.

Tried packages deb and rpm Edge - do not work, tried to roll back Edge - the same is useless ... (

@SamLukeYes, i wanted to ask the same question - what does the obsolete have to do with it?

SamLukeYes commented on 2021-07-14 16:40 (UTC)

Why is this flagged out of date? I don't see a new version in https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/edge/pool/main/m/microsoft-edge-beta/.

Vedun commented on 2021-07-14 14:00 (UTC)

Only rollback to 248-3 of these two packages helps:
sudo downgrade systemd systemd-libs

and reboot

Go to: https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/s/systemd/ and download: systemd-248.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Then, go to: https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/s/systemd-libs/ and download: systemd-libs-248-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

In your download directory, open a terminal and run the following:

sudo pacman -U systemd-248.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst systemd-libs-248-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Thanks @Lex-2008 I can figure now how it works.

@bittin in the PKGBLUID you call install for microsoft-edge-dev.sh but you renamed this wrapper and its content with the prefix microsoft-edge-beta to match with this package so it can't find the file.

Also you need to add it as source and its checksum. And inside this wrapper you exec for the binary in the wrong folder, it must be msedge-beta.

bittin commented on 2021-05-17 17:19 (UTC)

@Lex-2008 @EsauPR

Added that file now, not sure if i did it right however as this is my first PKGBUILD i created from scratch, would anyone of you help with being co-maintainers? that might know better how to do it

Lex-2008 commented on 2021-05-17 13:36 (UTC) (edited on 2021-05-17 13:36 (UTC) by Lex-2008)

@EsauPR: re config file: not at the moment, as I see. If you compare PKGBUILD files for beta and dev, then you will see that unlike beta, dev has this code snippet on line 50:

# User flag aware launcher
install -m755 microsoft-edge-dev.sh "${pkgdir}/usr/bin/microsoft-edge-dev"

And indeed microsoft-edge-dev.sh reads $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/microsoft-edge-dev-flags.conf file.

I believe that replacing /usr/bin/microsoft-edge-beta symlink with a similar file will do the trick.

Anyone knows the name of the config file for the beta version? For dev version the config was in ~/.config/microsoft-edge-dev-flags.conf but now doesn't work anymore. I also tried microsoft-edge-beta-flags.conf

@bittin you have gtk3 as both hard and optional dependency. You should probably remove it from optional. Also, are you sure about libpipewire02? Recent versions of chromium use pipewire 3, so most you want to just add pipewire optional dependency. check here
