It is a sad story but yeah. In 2024 there is no any distro what have a just-working email desktop client. I think nowadays an client should be run in background to notify the users from every email and to get its window starting as quickly as much possible. The UI is another story, I like the GTK+. So right now the only acceptable client now is the Thunderbird w/ the minimizer plugin.

The evoluti-on repo was not touched for 6 years. And the programs are evolving, developing but somehow this feature is not a mainstream, popular thing. Maybe the people using their phone for everything. I do not know. It is another sad story.

It is not a suprise, the birdtray is not workint too. (Again.)

@system7 So yeah, in the end you were right. New GNOME broke all evolution-on packages. They all close evolution instead keeping it in tray. The only way to hide evolution is to explicitly click tray icon. I quite dislike what gnome folks are doing for several years now.

I don't know if there is some upstream project/fork, that aims to keep maintaining evolution-on package, but I frankly have no interest anymore to even look. Most repos are archived. So I am disowning the package and maybe someone can take over.

@jvybihal Sadly yes, I configured them correctly. :) I do not know it is relevant or not but I have some errors on startup. Btw, I am on wayland.

@system7 maybe stupid question, but have you configured the plugin? In the section where you activate it, you need to check box Hide on close that you want to it to hide to tray.

@jvybihal Thank you for your time! I have just tried to reinstall the whole Evolution and this package. Try to install the evolution-on pkg instead of evolution-on-git. Re-checking the Evolution On in the plugin list. I deleted the whole ~/.cache dir.

The only thing I did not try the clean install. (W/o my Evolution settings. But I would skip this option now.)

Actually, before the GNOME upgrade it simply just worked. Currently, the program immediately closing if I click on X button even if I use alt + f4.

@system7: I don't use GNOME, but I went ahead and tested it anyway. It works. I have built it, enabled in evolution plugin list and added system tray to Gnome Shell. It's there and it works the same way as it works in my Xfce4. Can you please try clean build in chroot?

On GNOME 46 it stops to working. ☹️

package evolution-on-git [1] has been flagged out-of-date by MarsSeed [2]: Defunct package. Upstream discontinued since 2018, its repo is archived. Use extra/evolution-on instead.

The package is not defunct, it builds and I use it daily with zero issues.

I use this version without appindicator. It works fine, so I might as well adopt it.

Thanks @springer, I updated the package to use that fork.
