Arch Linux User Repository

Since DaVinci Resolve Studio cannot be installed directly via AUR helpers like paru or yay, I suggest adding and pinning a clear step-by-step guide for beginners explaining how to build and install the package from the local installer.

The instructions should also include how to obtain the required .zip file from the official Blackmagic Design website:

1. Go to https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support
2. In the "Latest Downloads" section, select the latest version of "DaVinci Resolve Studio" for Linux
3. Fill out the registration form (name, email, etc.)
4. After submitting, a .zip file will be downloaded automatically – this file must be placed in the same directory as the PKGBUILD before building
5. Continue ...

Such a guide would be helpful for users new to Arch-based systems who legally own a DRS license but are unfamiliar with manual package building.

IMPORTANT!

Since version 19.1.3-2 this package will not download automatically the source file from the upstream site.

To build this package you will need to manually download the file from https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion and place it in the same directory with the PKGBUILD.

This would reduce the mess in this package, making it more readable and clear. Also bypassing the required information from the upstream URL is not allowed in an automated way.

For activation the user running davinci-resolve-studio must have write access to /opt/resolve/.license. That's where license information is stored.

Would be nice to have a e. g. davinci group having write access to that directory so users can be added to that group.

Similar to arugifa, I was unable to activate. I couldn't run with sudo, it kept crashing, so running sudo chown -R <user> /opt/resolve. After that I was able to activate, then you can chown it back to root.

I don't know if this is safe or not, but it worked, and I needed resolve to work :)

I'm dropping here a note about activation, which could maybe help others.

After installing DaVinci Resolve Studio, I was unable to activate it (I was getting some network error from DaVinci GUI). I had no problem to activate it on my dual-boot Windows though.

So I tried to launch DaVinci with sudo, and no problem to activate it. I can use it with my normal user then.

DaVinci probably requires to create some file in /opt/resolve during activation. That's my guess.

I noted that if I remove the makedepends after install I have issues with the GUI. Keeping the makedepends seems to fix. Posting in case this helps anyone else.

Updated to 18.04 yesterday. Also the linux kernel was upgrade to version 6.0.x.... and with it the nvidia drivers. Since then I do get the message that the Nvidia GPU cannot be initialized any more. I am on an optimus laptop (intel/nvidia) and before the update it was running fine (resolve 18.03 with reverse prime - prime-run). Excerpt from the log:

EDIT: it does work, if I do not load the intel GPU drivers (modsetting) though.
