The repo has moved to github.com/ranger/ranger (from hut/ranger). PKGBUILD still works though.

I get the following error when running makepkg: fatal: Could not read from remote repository. Please make sure you have the correct access rights and the repository exists. Using "http://git.savannah.gnu.org/r/ranger.git", fixes this.

What metadata is bad? The version number?

This could simply be reuploaded with the appropriate metadata (e.g. use mkaurball from pkgbuild-introspection).
