I will not update (for now) to the latest version 7.3.6.9326 because it crashes continuously for me.

Thanks, unfortunate timing then.

For reference, with Gnome shell / wayland I need to

unset QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME
unset QT_QPA_PLATFORM

to avoid

Google Earth has caught signal 6.

> Well 1882 means 38% of all registered aur-users. Nno, we have over 49 _thousand_ registered accounts: https://aur.archlinux.org/ But it doesn't mean all of those are for different people.

It's prohibited, unless permitted by Google (http://earth.google.com/intl/en-US/license.html): [...] 2. Restrictions on Use. Unless you have received prior written authorization from Google (or, as applicable, from the provider of particular Content), you must not: [...] (c) redistribute, sublicense, rent, publish, sell [...] The 'googleearth-package' community app is assumably for Mint Isadora (9; 2010-05-18) and Lisa (10; 2011-11-26), even though they've had it in the repos since Daryna (4.0; 2007-10-15): http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_daryna.php

Oh, and the 'non-free' thing means nothing. We got Skype on our repo and Linux Mint got Google Earth in theirs: http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/import/g/googleearth/, http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/import/g/google-earth-stable/

@lks archstuff unofficial repo provides google-earth 5.2.1.1588-1 - is that what you mean by 'binary repository with pre-build packages'? The package was build by using a PKGBUILD, as every other Arch Linux package.

Det commented on 2013-08-02 20:16 (UTC)

No, nowhere is the right place. First of all, you mean repackaging? I personally am very content not having some Launchpad-like separate repo system in here for every single package that doesn't use build(). You're even suggesting that one of the 1881 voters (why are they more capable than anybody else, by the way?) should start maintaining their _own_ repo, tell about it in wherever and then have this package removed. And what then when the maintainer gets bored and decides, "Who gives a shit?" I'm assuming we'll create a second user repo and again inform the world just how magnificent the idea is. And you not only want this mess to be done for this package but for everybody else that use binaries? Did you actually think this through before you said it? And the thing about Google creating its own repo for Arch Linux, I don't know where did you get this idea from, but it will probably not happen in the next 50 years. It just doesn't work.

I don't know if that's the right place but google earth is the google related packages with the most votes. I think these packages shouldn't be in the aur because the aur and the PKGBUILDs are wrappers for building packages - and not download them and do some sort of reverse-engineering. Google or one of the 1881 should install it's own binary repository with pre-build packages, I think. If there is a binary repository the aur is not needed. This stuff shouldn't be in 'community' since it's nonfree. lks

The "-i" flag installs the package for makepkg and "-U" for pacman. That's pretty basic stuff: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman#Additional_commands, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Makepkg#Usage The result is a simple uncompressed .pkg.tar (PKGEXT='.pkg.tar') because it's just so damn faster to build. E: And this release crashes a lot for me too, so you might wanna either stick to the previous 7.1 or even 6.2: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/google-earth6/
