I think we should not update to the GE "test" builds right now. There was a stabile branch back in the days in a similar situation and I do not think it is worth the hassle. There were alot of problems with those RC versions back then. It usually takes GE only 1-2 weeks to bring up a new version anyway.
I had this version of proton broke for a while, but I finally figured out that it had left a folder /usr/share/steam/compatibilitytools.d/proton-ge-custom/dist
. Proton would try to clean it up but couldn't because of lack of permission. Removing it manually fixed it. No idea why was that there.
Like @maykin-99 has brought, it would be great if it could keep the same name by patching compatibilitytool.vdf
so we don't have to reconfigure steam after every updates.
When I install this package with yay, it shows error after package was built:
sudo: effective uid is not 0, is /usr/bin/sudo on a file system with the 'nosuid' option set or an NFS file system without root privileges?
-> exit status 1
I checked my /usr/bin/sudo with ls -l
and it returned
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 223536 Sep 22 14:19 /usr/bin/sudo*
However, I can install normally with sudo pacman -U (created .zst)
Every time Proton GE updates I have to reconfigure it in Steam (both globally and per game if I want to use Proton instead of native).
I assume it is because the name in compatibilitytool.vdf
changes and from Steam's perspective the previously configured version is no more there so it resets its setting.
Is it possible to not change the name between updates to avoid this issue?
@Emilie, no one seems to have reported the same issue as you. Please report it to the #proton
channel in Proton-GE Discord. I'm also there, please CC me.
6.18 seems to not work with most of my Steam games, I'd advise not updating for now. Or at least downloading the 6.16 tarball separately and installing it under ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d
.
No, refreshing the WINEPREFIXes under compatdata did nothing.
6.18-GE-2 is out. Waiting for an update.

The "chaotic-aur" co-maintainer is a bot that pulls any merged PR in https://github.com/chaotic-aur/pkgbuild-proton-ge-custom-bin back to this package. So if you guys have contributions or bump versions earlier than the maintainer, please share them as PRs. The commits will keep your authorship.
Happy gaming!
