New version:
- You still really don't want to upgrade.
- Somewhat functional but still very crashprone on nVidia. Your mileage may vary.
- Still pretty hopeless on Intel.
- I have no ATI test machines, but we all know that's probably the worst case scenario :)
Thanks to OttoA for a cleaned up and more versatile PKGBUILD.

Done all that, still crashes.
Using i686 with latest nvidia drivers (256.53-1) and GeForce 7600 GT.

OttoA, try to erase .googleearth in your home directory, remove the previous package, be sure that /opt/googleearth isn't there anymore, and try to reinstall mine's or gt_swagger's PKGBUILD.
Also if it doesn't work, specify your system config so we can make some guessing on what's wrong in your install

Closing the startup tip seems to work somewhat
- clicking on pictures doesn't always work, sometimes they are only displayed when the window is resized
- the internal browser crashes (same problem as the tooltip probably)
I propose adding these lines to the startup scripts: http://gist.github.com/593337

The new version at least works for my nvidia box ... when I get a moment I'll give it a go on my Intel one. Regardless I'll push an updated PKGBUILD today. It'd be nice if this new version FINALLY ... FINALLY works for at least intel and nvidia such that you can have one without breaking the other.

with this i get a working google-earth, lastest version. Do not change the "use_arch_lib" var because by using them google-earth crashes istantly.
I'm on a i6868 system with nvidia

I will not update (for now) to the latest version 7.3.6.9326 because it crashes continuously for me.
