* PKGBUILD now updated with pkgdesc and depends array moved to the end per graysky's suggestion so that they are picked up properly by AUR. I didn't increase the pkgrel number because there's no need to rebuild.

It's the efficiency and simplistic angles that interest me. Like azleifel said, #2 and #3.

@cantabile: I asked myself that question when I first read greysky's suggestion. Thinking about it, I came up with three advantages: 1. Having separate PKGBUILDs would mean spending time maintaining two almost identical packages. 2. If the user only needs either ghb or HandBrakeCLI then there is no point in installing both, saving 14 or 15Mb of disk space (I know that disk space is cheap but it's the principle of the thing!) 3. If the user wants both ghb and HandBrakeCLI installed then the build time will not be doubled (handbrake takes about 15 minutes to build on my system!)

And the reason why these can't be in two separate pkgbuilds is... ?

@azleifel - it's just cosmetic in the sense that they will display on the webpage. When it comes to build the package, everything works as it should. You can get around this by placing the deps for the main package at the end of the pkgbuild.

Ok, my curiosity got the better of me. AUR seems to have accepted the split package PKGBUILD with the workaround. The only issue is that it has picked up the package description and dependencies list from the second package, i.e. handbrake-cli-svn.

I'll look into this over the next few days (I didn't have time today because of going up to London to see my dear old Mum on the occasion of her 86th birthday). In the meantime, is the compromise of having one package containing the full install of ghb and HandBrakeCLI and one containing just HandBrakeCLI a trick to fool AUR or would it be possible to completely split the package in the same way as the [extra] packages, i.e. make one containing just ghb and one containing HandBrakeCLI ? A completely split package would make more sense if it can be done.

@SH - I know that it doesn't officially support them, but if you construct the PKGBUILD as I have here, they can be successfully uploaded: http://pastebin.com/EUau9b1p Give it a try :)

The AUR does not support split packages yet.
